The topic of being a transgender was not widely spoken about, but slowly the topic has come alive and then turned into a wild fire when Bruce Jenner came out as transgender and introduced himself as Caitlyn Jenner. Now you can’t turn your head or a page in a magazine, even click to the next page on the internet without seeing some or other story about a transgender and what they are going through. There have been transgenders for longer than we give credit for. As we know, with everything there is always the first. Here are some celeb transgenders starting with the first who was only a celeb for being the first.
Lili was born Einar Mogens Wegener in 1882, she was famous in her own right being the first to openly undergo gender reassignment surgery, and in her era which was 1930 it was all experimental surgery which led the way to becoming what it is today. She had 3 operations but complications arose in the 3rd operation, and she died, not before changing her name and gender legally first. Her life’s story did turn into 2 book one of which is called “The Danish Girl” by David Ebershoff which is being adapted into a film.
Actress, musician and song writer born in Los Angeles, Alexis was born Robert Arquette. Alexis is best known for being part of the Arquette acting family. She underwent her transition from male to female which was made into a documentary called Alexis Arquette: She’s My Brother; it debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007. Identifying with being a female from an early age her sister Patricia was quoted saying, “I remember growing up, and we were in kindergarten, and they’d say, ‘Get in line, boys here, girls here.’ Alexis would always get in the girls’ line.”
TV personality and model, born in New Jersey, Carmen was born Christopher Roman. She is best known for her appearance on the third season of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ and ‘RuPaul’s Drag U’. She first appeared on the show as a male identifying as gay but has since transitioned into being a woman in 2010. Commenting that at seven she knew she was different. Not being able to relate to being a boy. She would raid her Mum’s make-up bag. Dressing in her cloths and posing in the mirror until she heard a knock on the door and I was brought back to reality.
Fashion model and fashion designer, born in Maryland. She was the first transgender woman to compete on America’s Next Top Model. This gave her the edge she needed to become a well-known transgender TV personality.
In 2007, Isis appeared in an MSNBC special titled Born in the Wrong Body, a documentary about the lives of transgender teens across the United States. Isis began hormone replacement therapy in 2007, and had a sex reassignment surgery in 2009.
Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski
Lana and Lilly are film directors, screenwriters and producers, born in Chicago 2 ½ years apart. Lana was born Laurence “Larry” Wachowski and Lilly was born Andrew Paul “Andy” Wachowski. The sisters are known professionally as the Wachowski’s and for their film The Matrix .
It is rumoured that Lana started transitioning in the early 2000s. Neither sibling spoke directly with press about the subject, with their producers commenting that it was untrue. Only after the release of their film speed racer did Lana complete her transition. Her sister Lilly on the other hand only came out in 2016 and also did her first time appearance as a transgender female at the GLAAD awards recently. They are both private and reclusive people.
Caroline ‘Tula’ Cossey
Born in 1954 as Barry Kenneth Cossey. She has a rare form of Klinefelter syndrome where instead on extra X chromosome she has a two xx chromosome extra. Which made her features more feminine while growing up as a boy? She started receiving hormone therapy at 17 and at 20 had her sexual reassignment surgery done. Her fame came in the form of being one of the Bond girls in the 1981 bond movie For Your Eyes Only, and in 1991 the first transgender model in the playboy magazine.
Born twins originally named Reginald Cox in 1984. Is an actress who appears on the original series of Orange Is the New Black. The debate of weather Laverne is still all man or has had gender reassignment to be female is still going round; she has kept that part of her life very private.
